Writing the TV Pilot
Prerequisite: Introduction to Screenwriting. 42 Classroom hours.
This course is an introduction to the analysis and practice of writing a television pilot. Some TV writing basics are covered, including the creation of an outline and a beat sheet, A stories and B stories, serial vs procedural episode progression, and maintaining tone. TV pilot development skills include choosing a genre/style, giving your premise "legs," creating compelling series characters, and writing a "show bible.” Students will engage in writing exercises to develop these skills, culminating in the outline of a full pilot episode and a show bible. Considerable outside work is necessary.
