Equipment Use

Equipment is divided into two categories: In-House equipment and Out-of-House equipment. This distinction refers to whether or not the equipment borrower is permitted to take the equipment away from the Pittsburgh Filmmakers building. All equipment is available to be used in the building. However, only items designated as Out-of-House equipment maybe taken off the premises. In-House equipment is strictly for use in the Filmmakers building.

HOW TO BORROW EQUIPMENT FOR OUT-OF-HOUSE USE

The Equipment Office serves students and members by supplying the equipment, facilities and advice needed to help make their media art and creative endeavors successful. The EQO offers a wide range of resources including: HD video, super-8 and 16mm motion picture film, as well as digital and various format still film cameras, all with support and accessories. Other equipment such as studio strobes, film and video lights, microphones, audio recorders and grip equipment are also available for out-of-house check out. In-house facilities include digital print and scan labs, Final Cut editing labs and suites, Avid editing suites, darkrooms, classrooms, and a soundstage with a lighting grid and green screen. Along with maintaining and managing the check in/out of equipment, the Equipment Office provides expertise and guidance to the Pittsburgh Filmmakers community.

Borrowing equipment for Out-of-House use is a process comprised of three procedures

  1. Make a Reservation*

    Reservations may be made in-person during the Hours of Operation, or by phone by calling 412-681-9500*

    *reservations can not be made on Monday before 4pm or on Friday after 2pm

  2. Check out the Equipment

    You must have your Filmmakers Student ID card or Member Card to do this. No exceptions. Be sure to check your equipment before you take it out of the building. Equipment must be checked out by the student/member that made the reservation.

  3. Check-In the Equipment

    The time of day equipment is due back at the Equipment Office depends on what day of the week the equipment is due back.

    MONDAY - THURSDAY: 10AM-4PM
    FRIDAY: 10AM-2PM
    SATURDAY - SUNDAY: 10AM-12PM*


    Students and members may send someone else to return their equipment; however, the student or member who checked out the equipment should fill out any usage cards prior to the return, and remains responsible for any breakage, loss and/or late returns of equipment.
